August 2016 focus and class schedule

Everything in our awareness is in some stage of change, of transformation. There is a process involved of one force acting upon another. In the practice of yoga, tapas is a process that generates (spiritual) heat to train the senses so that we may obtain mastery over the tendency for the senses to run amuck. (See Yoga Sutra 2.43.)

In ancient traditional yoga teachings, a chariot metaphor was used to describe tapas. Our 10 senses are like the horses; the reins are the mind; the driver is the intelligence or the part of mind that can discriminate; the chariot is the physical body; and the passenger is the true Self, the witness. All the roads on which the chariot can travel represent the countless desires we can be pulled to fulfill.

Here is a simple example: You want to have a healthier diet and lose a little weight because you know you will feel better. In the morning, you start out motivated with this intention. Throughout the day, however, powerful senses that are in control give in to eating that donut at the office or that bag of chips at the end of the day. Then you can feel defeated. Tapas is the process of sitting in and tolerating the intense discomfort of not giving in to the strong desire with the opposite force of resistance. Mind says to hand, “I will not allow you to pick the donut up, even though you want to.” At this point, best to get away fast and apply diversion strategies. The stronger mind becomes, the easier it is to keep the senses in check.

To hear a 3-minute guided practice using the chariot metaphor to incorporate tapas in your life, check out Swami J’s website and click on the “listen” tab under the title.

August updates:

  • Two new teachers, Cassandra Cantrell and Emily Pike Stewart. Please join us in welcoming Cassandra and Emily to teaching at 4yoga! These brief bios will help you learn a little about each of them, and we look forward to practicing together.

Cassandra Cantrell (RYT-200) practices the rigorous Jivamukti yoga in the lineage of Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga as well as the more gentle Awareness yoga, which is in the lineage of Svaroopa yoga. Having experienced the healing that yoga and meditation brings to body, mind, and spirit, Cassandra was led to complete an intensive 500-hour teacher training and is currently working toward her certification in Curvy yoga. She knows firsthand the stress-relieving properties of yoga, recognizes that life is practice, and delights in witnessing and participating in the unfolding that yoga brings to individuals.

Emily Pike Stewart (RYT-200) has practiced yoga since 2006 and did her teacher training in 2014 at the Sivananda Meenakshi Ashram in Madurai, India. Emily draws primarily from the Sivananda lineage in her own teaching, incorporating pranayama (yogic breathing), asanas (yogic postures), and deep relaxation in every class. She and her husband Chris are new to Bowling Green and excited to be here!

  • Monthly talk and meditation session. Juanita will host this session on Friday, August 19, at 6:45 p.m. As always, there is no charge for this informal gathering, which provides an opportunity to ask questions about and discuss meditation and to experience a short meditation.
  • Living Our Yoga Yin class. Angie and Alice continue this series on Friday, August 26, at 5:30 p.m. with a focus on the third niyama, tapas (heat). This class incorporates readings and teachings to enhance students’ experience and to create conditions that may take them deeper into the mind, body, and spirit aspects of this wonderful gift of yoga. The traditional yin asanas remain the same as in our classic yin class.

For a full list of August classes, please see the calendar page or pick up a hard copy from The Pots Place. We also post updates each morning on our Facebook page, should you find it convenient to keep up with us there.

Accessing studio after class has begun: Remember that even if you are running late when the shop downstairs is closed, you can still join us for class. If the front door is locked, come to the back door of The Pots Place (look for the blue building) and ring the buzzer. The teacher will then unlock the door remotely for you to enter through the pottery studio.

July 31 classes: we say both “goodbye” and “hello”

On Sunday, July 31, join us at the studio for a day of teacher transitions at 4yoga.

Carly initiated the Sunday-morning Basics class in July 2015, and we know many of you have enjoyed having that additional opportunity to practice each weekend.  This Sunday, Carly will say “goodbye” to teaching at 4yoga as she takes a teaching hiatus to continue her studies at SKYCTC, where she will be majoring in Biology. When she gets a break from schoolwork and her job at Kroger’s pharmacy, Carly is looking forward to reading more fantasy novels and continuing and expanding her own personal yoga practice. Come to Carly’s 10 a.m. class to wish her well!

Cassandra will say “hello” as she guest teaches the 4 p.m. class.  Cassandra practices the rigorous Jivamukti yoga in the lineage of Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga as well as the more gentle Awareness yoga, which is in the lineage of Svaroopa yoga.

July 2016 focus and class schedule

How does your garden grow? With the flowers and foods you want? All from the seeds you sow? What about the seeds you didn’t sow–those persistent, hardy plants we call weeds? With regular diligence, it is possible to maintain your garden and watch it manifest the bounty you intended when you planted it.

Our minds are much like a garden. Left unattended and untrained, the mind can produce countless unintentional/irrational thoughts that can, in turn, produce negative moods and emotions that sprout and generate more “weed” seeds from the resulting negative behaviors. We can become trapped in a looping cycle of anxiety, depression, fear, anger, etc. On the other hand, allowing for the unplanned, spontaneous thought to grow could be considered being open to inspiration and intuition, the highest form of knowing.

In this month of light (more minutes of light than any other month), we can challenge ourselves to discern which weeds/thoughts to keep and which to let go of. Your thoughts are subtle and powerful. Use your potential to cultivate peace and contentment in your life by developing the practice of witnessing your thoughts. Bask in the bounty and realization of the powerful, divine being that you are.

July updates:

  • Independence Day class. We continue our holiday tradition by offering a mixed-level class on Monday, July 4, at 9 a.m. Join Shigeko for this class that will be accessible to everyone and provide challenges for all levels of students.

  • Living Our Yoga Yin class. Angie and Alice continue this series on Friday, July 29, at 5:30 p.m. with a focus on the second niyama, Santosha (contentment). This class incorporates readings and teachings to enhance students’ experience and to create conditions that may take them deeper into the mind, body, and spirit aspects of this wonderful gift of yoga. The traditional yin asanas remain the same as in our classic yin class.

Calling Franklin yogis: Frances teaches free class on Tuesday nights!

When they decided to offer a weekly yoga class during the summer, the folks at Goodnight Memorial Library in Franklin reached out to 4yoga to see if one of our teachers would be available. Fortunately, Frances was willing and able to provide this benefit to the Franklin community!

Frances’ class provides gentle stretching and strengthening exercises designed to connect body, mind, and breath as well as to increase flexibility. This class is designed for adults who have little or no yoga experience and want to learn introductory poses.

The class meets on Tuesdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m., and will run through July 19. It is free for participants, who are asked to bring their own mats if they have them, a blanket or towel, and a man’s necktie to use as a strap. Don’t let a lack of supplies stop you, though: Frances has a few mats available to loan.

Goodnight Memorial Library is located at 203 S. Main Street in Franklin, Kentucky.

Getting Unstuck: Creating a Limitless Life (free 21-day online meditation program)

At last Friday’s talk and meditation session, hosted by Alice, we discussed ways to continue developing our individual meditation practices, and two of us shared our experiences with the series of 21-day online meditation programs provided by Oprah and Deepak Chopra.  Their newest experience, Getting Unstuck:  Creating a Limitless Life, begins on July 11.

More information, including a link to register, is available here.  As with previous programs, registration is free, and each day provides participants with a 20-minute guided audio meditation, centering thought, and mantra. There is also the option to reflect on your experience in a private online journal.

If you have been looking for a way to begin or additional support to continue your meditation practice, you may find this program’s flexibility meets your needs.

Alice completes Yin immersion course

We are pleased to announce that Alice recently completed a 20-hour training specifically focused on Yin yoga. This immersion, held at Sanctuary for Yoga in Nashville, was led by Liz Stewart, who teaches Sanctuary’s Yin classes and has studied with Bernie Clark and Sarah Powers, both Yin experts and authors of books about Yin yoga.

Continuing education for all yoga teachers is very important. We open our minds to new thinking, learn new skills and bond with other teachers of like mind. Our goal in continuing to learn about yoga is to provide our students with state-of-the- art thinking about safety (above all) and new practices that energize and enhance your experience at 4yoga.

Alice has a favorite Bernie Clark quote she likes to share with students in Yin classes:

We don’t use our body to get into a pose, we use the pose to get into our body.

In Yin yoga we come to an appropriate depth (our edge), resolve to remain still, and hold the pose for time. This process allows us to become acutely aware of what is going on in our body. With time and practice, the student will use the pose to get into the mind and spirit as well.

For Alice, Yin yoga has been life-changing in that she discovered the power of stillness. Going through the immersion training at Sanctuary validated for Alice that, while Yin is a strong physical practice, with resolve, Yin touches us deep within the body, mind, and spirit. When we hold the poses in stillness for time, something deep within is triggered and the real benefits of yoga are revealed. For many, Yin is a path to mindfulness, meditation, spirituality, and wholeness.

In Yin yoga we work with the connective tissues in the body: bones and cartilage, tendons and ligaments and fascia. In most yang style yoga, the student is stressing the muscles. This is a fundamental difference. Most teachers who are familiar with Yin yoga believe we need both styles of yoga: Yang for strength, fitness, and flow; Yin for flexibility, mindfulness, and gracefulness.
