Continued debate over yoga in schools: Encinitas, CA

NPR’s Morning Edition ran a story today about yoga being taught in schools in Encinitas, California.  If you are a regular reader of the 4yoga blog, this situation may have sounded familiar because Erica blogged about it back in October.  See her ideas and readers’ comments here.

January 2013 focus & schedule

As we move through the holiday season, we are reminded that our culture is not very proficient in practicing stillness and experiencing silence and yet that is exactly what nature is doing as the season of winter deepens.  We are highly active in our doing, achieving, pushing, and forcing things to happen.  As the bustle of the holidays winds down, even our intentions to undo the effects of over indulgence have a pushing and forceful aspect to them.

Let’s have a long exhale and rest, be still, feel the silence and listen.  Listen to the inner voice of yourself.  One might guess that we fear inner stillness and silence as we cover it with a constant barrage of electronic distractions and activity.  To avoid feelings of depression and slothful inertia, invite the light of awareness and acceptance into your stillness.

Now is the time, as we align with the natural world around us in hibernation, to set intentions and clear the mind so it may be a fertile place for them to manifest.  Discover and receive the tremendous power of stillness and silence.  Follow this link to an article titled “Know Thyself” by Swami Rama to inspire you and give you some tools to use for some winter introspection.

We welcome all who would like to begin, reinvigorate, or continue their yoga practice to join us in 2013.  The beginner class will continue to meet on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., including on New Year’s Day, and new students are encouraged to join us at any time.  We would like to remind anyone who is running late to a class that although we lock the front door (facing the square) at the start of class time, you may still attend class by entering through the back door (facing Mariah’s).

Upcoming guest teachers and special events:

  • Monday, 12/31 (New Year’s Eve):  9 a.m. mixed class with Angie (all are welcome)
  • Tuesday, 1/1 (New Year’s Day):  9 a.m. mixed class with Kim (all are welcome).  Please notice this class replaces the usual Tuesday-morning gentle class today only.
  • Tuesday, 1/8:  9:30 a.m. gentle class with Susan Polk
  • Tuesday, 1/8:  5:30 p.m. beginner class with Linda Hendrickson
  • Monday, 1/14:  5:30 p.m. flow class with Linda Hendrickson
  • Friday, 1/25:  6:45 p.m. discussion and meditation following the yin class (all are welcome, no fee)

Additional housekeeping details:

  • Renovations and updates to The Pots Place will begin soon.  As this project progresses, we will keep everyone posted via email and Facebook about any temporary changes in how to access the studio for classes.
  • Although we hope not to have to use it, we have set an inclement weather policy in case of snow.  If we need to cancel class because of the weather, we will announce that cancellation at least one hour before the beginning of the class, and we will share the cancellation both via email and on Facebook.  If you would like us to add a supplemental email address for you so that you receive these notices quickly (e.g., if you want both your work and home addresses in our list), please let us know.

December newsletter

“Hello darkness my old friend….” These words of Paul Simon come to mind as we once again approach the darkest day of the year, the winter solstice, in the cycle of seasons. As we encounter this darkness, we need to in draw in its opposite, the light. During our evening practices (when darkness has descended by 5:00 p.m.) the view of glittering tree lights on the square brings a sense of sparkle and warmth to our spirits. We can only appreciate the light because of the darkness.

Exhaustion, stress, and loneliness are forms of internal darkness that we may encounter as we turn our focus inward. It is important to acknowledge them as friends, as Paul Simon’s words express, and not to make them our enemies. We often have a tendency to add more pressure and stress by pushing them away and judging them as uncomfortable. However, they are signals to light the flame of the true self in the heart, healing the sense of fragmentation into wholeness and acceptance. Making time and space in your daily routine for even a few moments of stillness and contemplation is a great gift to yourself, accepting all the parts of you.

During this month of December, we are thankful for the light of our community and practice together. We look forward to continued practice with those of you we know and to welcoming new people who wish to begin the practice of yoga. As previously announced, the beginner class will continue on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. through December, and new students are welcome to join us any week.

December schedule variations and special events:
Saturday, 12/1: basics class will begin at 8 a.m. because of the Christmas Parade. Unless you plan to remain downtown after class to enjoy the parade, we suggest parking on the south side of Chestnut Street for ease of departure. You may find the parking lot at the Public Theater of Kentucky convenient.
Friday, 12/14: discussion and meditation following the 5:30 p.m. yin class (no charge, all are welcome).
Monday, 12/24 and Tuesday, 12/25 (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day): no classes.
Monday, 12/31 (New Year’s Eve): 9 a.m. mixed level class with Angie (all are welcome).

Community is….

Community is witness; each member in this moment and that moment
Community has hands to pick you up and to clap for you
Community has legs to stand beside everyone
Community has arms to open the doors for others
Community has lips that release the truth
Community is hearts beating together and individually
Community accepts the old and the new
Community knows cycles and seasons
Community is extension beyond its denomination
Community is a destination not recognized by mapquest
Community is a place…community is compassion

A Very Important Practice

“The meditative mind is a pleasant mind, a stabilized mind. That state is called chitta-prasadana in Yoga-sutra 1.33. According to the sutra, such a state is obtained though the practice of

• Maîtri: Universal love towards those who are happy

• Karuna: Compassion towards those who are in suffering

• Mudita: Joyfulness at seeing others virtuous

• Upeksha: Indifference towards the evil in others

Without these practices the mind will never stabilize in meditation. The karmic debts we have not yet paid off will continue to disturb the meditation. While one is sitting with eyes closed, the mind will keep racing in all different directions.”

November newsletter (gratitude)

Dear Friends,

As we begin the month of November, we will focus on gratitude. November is the month of thanks-giving and to consciously keep this in focus can allow goodness to expand in your life. As a practice using awareness to foster gratitude, think of the last meal you had. As you imagine everything that was on your plate, think of all the human effort expended to bring this food, this source of energy, to you. Someone planted the seeds of the plants; tended to the animals; harvested, processed, packaged, and shipped every part of this meal for you. We can express gratitude to all of the individuals who participated in this process. And, as we perform actions in our lives, we can think of the people who will benefit from the fruits of our actions. Therefore, why not perform all actions as acts of service to another? Whether receiving the fruits of another’s efforts in gratitude or performing your actions with the attitude of service, we can realize that we are all participants in the web of sustaining our lives here on earth.

Please note that the 9:00 a.m. Sunday flow class will not be regularly scheduled. Instead, on various Sundays we will offer a “Spontaneous Sunday” class in that time slot. The class could be a flow and/or a clinic style practice for working on challenging poses. We would announce the class by email on either a Friday or Saturday before the class to those individuals who may have an interest in attending. Let us know if you wish to be on this email list by responding to this newsletter.
Also, the Beginner Series will continue on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. through November 20. We are open to continuing that class based on feedback from you. Please see the list below for November highlights and the full schedule in the attached file or on our website (https://4yoga.me/calendar).

November special events:
Friday, 11/16: 6:45 p.m. discussion and meditation following the 5:30 p.m. yin class (no charge, everyone welcome).
Thursday, 11/22 (Thanksgiving Day): 9:00 a.m. mixed level holiday class (all are welcome)

Controversy over yoga program in schools

A 4yoga student, Susan James, asked if we were aware of a recent news story from the San Diego area.  This story describes protests from parents of children enrolled in a school yoga program and their accusations that this program is indoctrinating their children into the Hindu religion.

I think that the view expressed by the parents in the article shows a lack of deeper understanding of the meanings of yoga and Hinduism.   Both are ancient traditions that are rich and complex in the depth of their meaning, and I do not believe they are simply grasped, especially if  one’s knowledge is based on what is seen in the modern culture and media coverage.

Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati, a teacher of traditional yoga, writes in the third paragraph of “Yoga, Hinduism, and Physical Fitness“:

The other diversion is the view that Yoga is but one aspect of a religion known as Hinduism.  Modern Yoga practitioners and teachers often face the assertion by people in their community that they are practicing or teaching Hinduism.  However,  few of these modern Yoga practitioners realize that it is extremely questionable whether there even exists a singular, unified religion known as “Hinduism”.  Rather than being religious, the word “Hindu” historically was a geographic, social, and cultural term.  The Indic history is one of tremendous diversity of principles and practices, and has only recently in history been invented into the concept of a single, homogenized “religion” called “Hinduism”.   If there is, in fact, no unified religion known as Hinduism, then it can hardly be accurately claimed that Yoga is part of that religion, much less that Yoga itself is “a religion.”

By clicking on the link to the article quoted above,  you can connect to Swami J’s website and find much more information about the traditional practice of yoga.  Feel free to email 4yoga.me@gmail.com, as well,  for additional resources about yoga.

From my perspective as a teacher of Hatha yoga to middle- and high-school-aged adolescents at the Warren Regional Juvenile Detention Center, in Bowling Green, KY, I see the benefits of this practice to this population to be tremendous based on the feedback from the students themselves.

Take Some Yin and Call Me in the Morning (yin yoga as preventative maintenance)

Kim spotted this new blog post about the benefits of yin on the Yoga Journal website.  In it, Neal Pollack notes:

When most people, even people who practice, hear the phrase “did yoga,” they imagine a sweaty vinyasa flow class that gets your heart pumping and pulls your IT band from stem to stern. That’s not what I undertook. Instead, I put myself on a course of yin yoga. This is a style, performed either seated, prone, or  on your knees, where you hold poses for three to five minutes, often using props. It’s heavily influenced by traditional Chinese medicine, designed to stretch your connective tissue, massage your joints, put minimal heat on the muscles, and generally heal what ails you.

Pollack goes on to explain the ways he uses yin to ease his aches and pains and prevent new ones from developing.
