February 2017 focus and class schedule

What a timely month to study and contemplate the yoga concept satya (truthfulness). As we grapple with the recent coining of the term “alternative facts,” we can turn to the ancient vedic texts, which predate all religions, for some perspective.  Sat, the root of satya, is that which does not change, the true nature or the essence. It is the stillness in the center of the spinning wheel, the calmness inside the storm.

When we identify with any facts, it is often to substantiate our ego:  “I am right and you are wrong.”  However, the highest knowledge comes from intuition, which is beyond the reasoning of the intellect.  To find the truth requires disengaging with the raging storm and going deep into your center to find the still place where the small still voice may be heard.

This month of February as we are moving into the light with longer days becoming evident and the dark yin energy beginning to stir, let a vigorous asana practice followed by the stillness of savasana be your path to finding the truth. There you will find peace beyond facts.

February updates:

  • Six chances to practice with Debbie Marquette.  We are thrilled to have Debbie teaching six classes (four Basics and two Flow) in the first half of the month.  We know both longtime Debbie students and folks taking her classes for the first time will enjoy these chances to practice with her!
  • Restorative class on Sun., Feb 19, at 5:45 p.m.  For a special opportunity to relax deeply, join Angie for the monthly Sunday-night Restorative class.  You can even create your own mini-retreat by taking Nicole’s 4 p.m. Basics class that day and then staying for Restorative.
  • Satya focus for Living Our Yoga.  This month’s Living Our Yoga class, on Fri., Feb. 24, focuses on the second yama, satya (truthfulness). In this class, Alice and Angie combine the traditional yin asanas with thematic readings and teachings to enhance students’ experience and to create conditions that may take them deeper into the mind, body, and spirit aspects of their practice.
  • Curvy Yoga on hiatus.  Thank you for the positive feedback on January’s Curvy Yoga classes with Cassandra!  Although we have placed the class on hiatus for February while we find a better place for it on the schedule, we hope to return it in March.
  • Beginner series on Saturdays at 11 a.m.  We are pleased to announce that our second, four-week Beginner series of the year will take place in February with Leslie teaching.  Although this class is already full, please let us know if you would be interested in a future one, and we will be in touch when we schedule the next series.
  • Two monthly classes at The Downing Museum.  In February we return to The Downing Museum for our ongoing second-Saturday yoga class and add a fourth-Saturday meditation class!  This monthly meditation class replaces our previous Friday-night meditation gathering at the studio.  We are grateful for the demand for these classes and for the opportunity to practice in such a beautiful space every month.  Watch your inbox and our Facebook page for announcements of registration for the March classes.
  • Invitation to participate in theater workshop with Emily.  On Wed., Feb. 8, at 4 p.m. Emily will host a free theater workshop at the studio and would love members of our community to participate.  Check our website for details on what to expect and how to RSVP to Emily.

For a full list of February classes, please see the attached schedule, the calendar section of our website, or a hard copy available at The Pots Place.  We also post updates each morning on our Facebook page, along with content from our blog, should you find it convenient to keep up with us there.

Inclement weather policy:  during inclement weather, we decide whether or not to cancel classes independently of area school districts’ decisions.  However, if we do need to cancel a class, we publicize that information at least one hour before it begins, and we announce all class cancellations in these three ways:

  1. an update to the online schedule of classes
  2. an email to all members of our list (send us a message at 4yoga.me AT gmail.com to be added to the list)
  3. a status update on our Facebook page

Accessing studio after class has begun:  Remember that even if the front door is locked when you arrive, you can still join us for class. Just come to the back door of The Pots Place (look for the blue building) and ring the buzzer.  The teacher will then unlock the door remotely for you to enter through the pottery studio.

Invitation: Theater Workshop on Wed., Feb. 8, 4 p.m.

Update (2/6):  Although this theater workshop has been canceled, you can find out more about the project by attending Hannah Drake’s presentation at IdeaFestival Bowling Green on March 15.

WHAT:  Rehearsing Justice:  Culture of Change Workshop
WHEN:  Wed., Feb. 8, 4–5:10 p.m. with 30 minutes afterward for refreshments and feedback
WHERE:  The Pots Place, 2nd floor studio and lounge
COST:  Free!

Since last April, one of our teachers, Emily Stewart, has been working on an arts fellowship in Louisville dealing with health equity (i.e., fair access to all the things that influence community wellness) in the Smoketown neighborhood.

Part of her work has been designing a series of interactive events called “Rehearsing Justice: Culture of Change Workshops.” These workshops use fun, group-oriented theatre games to explore the relationship between justice and health equity for Smoketown residents. Each event is specially designed to incorporate the goals of the community organization that is hosting it.

Before the series kicks off in Louisville, Emily would like to offer a free “practice” workshop in Bowling Green! While helping Emily get a trial run of leading one of her workshops with a live group, you will get to:

  • think about aspects of social justice from a yogic perspective
  • get curious about how you can effect change in your own life, family, or community
  • collaborate to brainstorm ideas and envision ways to overcome challenges
  • play games and have fun!

To register (or if you have any questions), please email Emily at emilypikestewart@gmail.com with your name and that of anyone attending with you.

Thank you!

January 2017 focus and class schedule

“You are what your deep, driving desire is. As your desire is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny.”—The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

Once again, we arrive at the New Year—the year that has not existed before, that has yet to be experienced, a blank canvas. As we contemplate this fresh start, it seems natural to set intentions so that we can be the co-creators of our history. Try this: allow yourself to float back to this time last year, the year before, and the year before. It is truly amazing to realize how life evolves and how you can now be in a place you could not have previously imagined. Whether it is a place you like or don’t like, on some level you have said “yes” to where you are. Your power of choice fueled with your will has led you to this exact point in time and space. Please accept all that has happened with deep compassion for yourself.

As you set your intentions for the new year, ask yourself, “What do I want?” Asking this question is like archers knowing what their targets are and aiming their arrows at that target. Each arrow represents your choice at any given time. Is this word I am about to speak or this action I am about to take aimed at my target?

There are quite a few new beginnings happening at 4yoga in January, including a new Curvy Yoga class, a 4-class beginner series, and the first meeting of the book club. Please see the list below for full details, and we look forward to seeing you in 2017!

January updates:

  • New Year’s Day class and potluck brunch. To begin 2017 with yoga and friends, join Angie at 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day for a mixed-level holiday class. Mixed-level classes are accessible to everyone, with modifications and variations to accommodate all students. After class, we invite everyone to stay for a casual, potluck brunch in the lounge. We will provide a variety of hot teas and juices. Feel free to bring anything you care to share—or just to stay and enjoy the company.
  • Curvy Yoga class on Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. We invite everyone to join Cassandra for this new weekly class, which begins on Tues., Jan. 3. No prior yoga experience is necessary. The class will emphasize not only the yoga poses (including using props to access the poses safely) but also building and sustaining positive body image. For more information about Curvy Yoga, see its website.
  • Beginner series on Saturdays at 11 a.m. Would you like to begin or revive your yoga practice? Sign up for our 4-week Beginner series, where Angie will teach several common poses, share modifications, and answer questions. To maintain a small class size and to allow this class to advance each week, pre-registration using this link is required. If you are interested in a Beginner series but unable to attend in January, please let us know so that we can consider adding another option to the February schedule.
  • First 4yoga Book Club meeting on Sun., Jan. 15. Do you like reading books and discussing them? Are you interested in learning more about yoga? Then join Cassandra as she hosts our first book club meeting, 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the lounge at the studio! The first book is Cyndi Lee’s May I Be Happy: A Memoir of Love, Yoga, and Changing My Mind, and we will brainstorm suggestions for the next book at our first meeting. We invite everyone to bring a snack to share while we talk.
  • Monthly talk and meditation session. Alice will host this session on Fri., Jan. 20, at 6:45 p.m. As always, there is no charge for this informal gathering, which provides an opportunity to ask questions about and discuss meditation and to experience a short meditation.
  • Restorative class on Sun., Jan. 22, at 5:45 p.m. For a special opportunity to relax deeply this month, join Angie for a Restorative class. For a mini-yoga retreat, take Nicole’s 4 p.m. Basics class and then stay for Restorative, too.
  • Return of Living Our Yoga Yin series. In 2016, Alice and Angie team-taught a special yin class that addressed one of the yamas or niyamas each month. They are looking forward to re-starting this series on Fri., Jan. 27, and beginning with the first yama, ahimsa. In this class, the traditional yin asanas remain the same; however, Alice and Angie share thematic readings and teachings to enhance students’ experience and to create conditions that may take them deeper into the mind, body, and spirit aspects of this wonderful gift of yoga.

For a full list of January classes, please see the calendar page or pick up a hard copy at The Pots Place.

  2. an email to all members of our list
  3. a status update on our Facebook page

Accessing studio after class has begun: Remember that even if you are running late when the shop downstairs is closed, you can still join us for class. If the front door is locked, come to the back door of The Pots Place (look for the blue building) and ring the buzzer. The teacher will then unlock the door remotely for you to enter through the pottery studio.

December 2016 focus and class schedule

As we move towards the winter solstice this year of 2016, we offer this prayer by Edward Hays from his book Prayers for a Planetary Pilgrim as a gift to remind you that when you feel the cold, dark night (internally or externally), remember that light is always there. May the beautiful community spirit of 4yoga be a light in the darkness as you practice in space surrounded by beauty in an art gallery or find sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the season in the sacred interior space of your body.

A Winter Solstice Prayer

The dark shadow of space leans over us…
We are mindful that the darkness of greed, exploitation, and hatred
also lengthens its shadow over our small planet Earth.
As our ancestors feared death and evil and all the dark powers of winter,
we fear that the darkness of war, discrimination, and selfishness
may doom us and our planet to an eternal winter.

May we find hope in the lights we have kindled on this sacred night,
hope in one another and in all who form the web-work of peace and justice that spans the world.

In the heart of every person on this Earth
burns the spark of luminous goodness;
in no heart is there total darkness.
May we who have celebrated this winter solstice,
by our lives and service, by our prayers and love,
call forth from one another the light and the love
that is hidden in every heart.
Amen.

Goat yoga: it’s a thing in Oregon…should it be in Kentucky?

As 4yoga takes yoga out of the studio and into our community, we are interested in hearing your feedback about our new locations (including The Downing Museum).

We are also always on the lookout for additional places to share yoga, and The New York Times recently ran this story on yoga with goats.  The video is especially great, as wandering goats add a new challenge to Warrior 3!  Perhaps something to consider for spring?

November 2016 focus and class schedule

As autumn deepens in the month of November, the qualities of yin get stronger. Yin energy moves inward and down in contrast to yang energy that moves outward and up. Ideally, we can harmonize our personal energy field with the greater one of the natural world for optimal health of body, mind, and spirit. This is the season of condensing and conserving, of adding moisture and warmth. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the organs associated with autumn are the lungs and the large intestine, both major detoxifying systems in the body. Grief and attachment are issues associated with the lungs. Hence, the melancholy mood that many people feel at this time is natural!

Here are some ideas for aligning and adjusting your lifestyle to the season: 1) incorporate more restorative and yin classes into your yoga routine to remove energy blocks and encourage lubrication of the connective tissues which are already dry in nature; 2) unclutter and organize your living or work space; 3) include more root vegetables and warm moist foods into your diet; 4) practice yogic breathing if you have a hard time letting go of people or of the past as it may be a sign of imbalance in the lungs.

Practice seeking your self-worth from discovery of what is inside: your values, beliefs, and spirituality as you let go of negative energy at this time. Express gratitude for the essence of who you are and for what is truly meaningful in your life.

November updates:

  • New monthly Saturday class at The Downing Museum. This class brings new meaning to “studio space” by providing a Basics-level yoga class in the main gallery at The Downing Museum! The first class meets on Sat., Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. To ensure that we don’t over-crowd the gallery, we are taking advance registration–please go to https://tinyurl.com/yoga-themuseum to complete the brief online form.
  • Flow class at 6 a.m. on Wednesdays. Join Cassandra as she continues to offer an early-morning class that provides “a gentle flow at sunrise to get the day started with gratitude and grace.”
  • Monthly talk and meditation session. Juanita will host this session on Fri., Nov. 18, at 6:45 p.m. As always, there is no charge for this informal gathering, which provides an opportunity to ask questions about and discuss meditation and to experience a short meditation.
  • Thanksgiving class at 9 a.m. As is traditional for holidays at 4yoga, we will offer a mixed-level class at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 24). Join Cassandra for this class, which will be accessible to students at all levels. The rest of the holiday weekend schedule remains the same.

For a full list of November classes, please see the the calendar page or a hard copy available at The Pots Place. We also post updates each morning on our Facebook page, should you find it convenient to keep up with us there.

Accessing studio after class has begun: Remember that even if you are running late
when the shop downstairs is closed, you can still join us for class. If the front door is locked, come to the back door of The Pots Place (look for the blue building) and ring the buzzer. The teacher will then unlock the door remotely for you to enter through the pottery studio.
