In preparation for May, we have opened registration for next month’s classes at The Downing Museum.  Because space in the gallery is limited, we do require pre-registration to manage the class sizes and, as a result, are unable to accommodate drop-in students.  Therefore, if you would like to join us for one or both of these classes, use the link(s) below to reserve your space.

Welcome Beshka Moore to 4yoga!

We are delighted to share the news that, in May, Beshka Moore will be joining us at 4yoga!

Beshka will teach a new Basics class that will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays.  Although many of you already know Beshka from her years of teaching yoga in both Bowling Green and Glasgow, we are sharing her bio here to introduce her to all the members of our community.  We look forward to practicing with Beshka next month!

Shri Brahmananda said, “A miracle is a change in perspective.”  Whether someone is just looking for the tools to live a healthier, more balanced life or is recovering from some form of trauma, the yogic path is transformational. 

When I practice yoga, it is a chance to get out of my head and the mundane of everyday life and connect breath, body, and soul in the form of moving prayer to something transformative and divine. I discovered yoga in the early 1990s and was immediately drawn to the timeless philosophy, while the asanas and pranayama helped my body recover from earlier childhood trauma. More than anything, I craved balance in a chaotic world, and yoga was that for me. 

I began teaching in 2000, wanting to share with others the timeless tools of yoga. Whether practicing on the beach, in a studio, in church, a park, or alone, yoga connects us to something deeper, bigger, more meaningful, and to each other. 

Over the years I have taught a wide variety of yoga students and have over 1,000 hours of study in pre-natal, kids, restorative, chair, seniors, power, vinyasa, Ashtanga, meditation, chakra yoga/meditation and recovery from trauma. I am 200 RYT Yogafit and 500RYT Hatha/Vinyasa and a Reiki practitioner. I live in Glasgow with my husband and two children where I love to cook delicious vegetarian meals, spend time with my four-legged friends, and teach and practice yoga and meditation in my home studio.

Gentle class hits the road: get ready, Ephram White Park!

We are delighted to announce that the range of the Gentle class will soon be expanding from downtown Bowling Green out into Warren County—specifically to Ephram White Park!  For six weeks this spring, Angie will offer an abbreviated version of the Gentle class to the clients of the Warren County Parks & Recreation Department Senior Center.

The class will meet on Mondays at 11:30 a.m., shortly after the existing Zumba class concludes so that students can take both classes if they choose.  The yoga class begins on April 3.  Best of all, because Warren County is paying Angie directly, the class is free to participants!

If you or anyone you know would like to join us for this new class, please come out to Ephram White Park any or all of these Mondays:  April 3, 10, 17, and 24; May 1, 8.  We look forward to taking our community yoga classes into another community venue!

April 2017 focus and class schedule

Each spring we experience the explosion of sensory delight as we witness the renewal of lifeforms…plants and animals blossoming and birthing. April is the month of Easter, the Christian celebration that reminds us that rebirth follows death. It is a natural time to remember what meaningful aspects of your yoga practice you may have strayed away from and renew them! Perhaps it was a daily breath practice or meditation time, or a focus on the health of the body through diet and asana practice.

This month, we focus on the fourth yama, brahmacharya. The most common interpretations of this yama are celibacy, abstinence, and restraint. However, we can look at those states as the results, not the causes, of spiritual practice. T.K.V. Desikachar in his book The Heart of Yoga, defines brahmacharya as “a movement towards the essential.” For a traditional yoga student, the goal of practice is remembrance of the highest reality, the divine, the absolute truth, or the presence of God. The accomplishment of this goal, in turn, creates brahmacharya.

To understand that the senses are doorways of deeper perception to “know thyself” makes it easier to enjoy them without being seduced by them to want more and more. With that understanding, enjoy your senses and celebrate the smells, tastes, and sensations of this beautiful world.

In April, we invite you to renew the intention that drew you to your practice of yoga and to practice with us in one of the many ways we are here to support you and each other on the yoga path.

Special events:

  • Book club meeting on Sun., April 2, at 1:30 p.m. Join our host Cassandra and other members of our community to discuss Baron Baptiste’s Perfectly Imperfect: The Art and Soul of Yoga Practice at our second 4yoga book club meeting. The book is available from the Warren County Public Library in both print and digital formats. Please bring a vegetarian snack to share; we will provide hot tea. We will conclude our discussion by 3:30 p.m. so that participants who wish to do so can attend the 4 p.m. Basics class.
  • Restorative class on Sun., April 9, at 5:45 p.m. For a special opportunity to relax deeply, join Angie for the monthly Sunday-night Restorative class. Create your own mini-retreat by taking Nicole’s 4 p.m. Basics class that afternoon and then staying for Restorative!
  • Brahmacharya focus for Living Our Yoga. This month’s Living Our Yoga class, on Fri., April 28, focuses on the fourth yama, brahmacharya. In this class, Alice and Angie combine the traditional yin asanas with thematic readings and teachings to enhance students’ experience and to create conditions that may take them deeper into the mind, body, and spirit aspects of their practice.
  • Two monthly classes at The Downing Museum. In April we continue at The Downing Museum for our second-Saturday yoga class and fourth-Saturday meditation class. The class fee remains the same as at the studio, $5. We are grateful for the demand for these classes and for the opportunity to practice in such a beautiful space every month. March 2017 focus and class schedule

In March, we continue to work with the yamas, the universal code of ethics prescribed in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, to apply to our lives with the intent of providing greater happiness and fulfillment. This month, we focus on asteya or non-stealing. Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati, a scholar of the Yoga Sutras, offers this translation: “when non-stealing is established, all jewels or treasures present themselves or are available to the yogi.”

The deeper meaning of this sutra goes well beyond stealing material goods. It means not taking what is not offered, which includes emotions, time, energy, and beliefs. The urge to steal, in this context, comes from a deep belief that we are not enough: it comes from a place of victimhood and feels completely disempowering. As a result, the urge causes us to look for happiness outside of ourselves by controlling relationships or situations. However, being a control addict or being the subject of one always leads to increased suffering!

Let go, let go, let go—and make space to receive the treasures that are being given to you when you open the door to receiving them!  By letting go of the belief that you are not enough and beginning to trust your connection to the boundless source manifested in you, life begins to flow.

In your asana practice, notice how asteya appears: look to the sensations in your own body to guide you and notice how the thought, “I am not ‘enough’ (thin, flexible, young, etc.)” shows up. Notice that thought, and choose to say “no” to it. Go inside and trust.

Next book club meeting: Baron Baptiste’s Perfectly Imperfect

At our inaugural 4yoga book club meeting in January, members enjoyed a lively discussion about Cyndi Lee’s May I Be Happy:  A Memoir of Love, Yoga, and Changing My Mind.  We also selected our next book:  Baron Baptiste’s Perfectly Imperfect:  The Art and Soul of Yoga Practice.  We chose Sun., April 2, as our next meeting date.  Please join us at 1:30 p.m. for snacks, tea, and conversation.

Perfectly Imperfect is available both in print and e-book versions through the Warren County Public Library.  We look forward to talking about it together!

February 2017 focus and class schedule

What a timely month to study and contemplate the yoga concept satya (truthfulness). As we grapple with the recent coining of the term “alternative facts,” we can turn to the ancient vedic texts, which predate all religions, for some perspective.  Sat, the root of satya, is that which does not change, the true nature or the essence. It is the stillness in the center of the spinning wheel, the calmness inside the storm.

When we identify with any facts, it is often to substantiate our ego:  “I am right and you are wrong.”  However, the highest knowledge comes from intuition, which is beyond the reasoning of the intellect.  To find the truth requires disengaging with the raging storm and going deep into your center to find the still place where the small still voice may be heard.

This month of February as we are moving into the light with longer days becoming evident and the dark yin energy beginning to stir, let a vigorous asana practice followed by the stillness of savasana be your path to finding the truth. There you will find peace beyond facts.

February updates: 

  • Six chances to practice with Debbie Marquette.  We are thrilled to have Debbie teaching six classes (four Basics and two Flow) in the first half of the month.  We know both longtime Debbie students and folks taking her classes for the first time will enjoy these chances to practice with her!
  • Restorative class on Sun., Feb 19, at 5:45 p.m.  For a special opportunity to relax deeply, join Angie for the monthly Sunday-night Restorative class.  You can even create your own mini-retreat by taking Nicole’s 4 p.m. Basics class that day and then staying for Restorative.
  • Satya focus for Living Our Yoga.  This month’s Living Our Yoga class, on Fri., Feb. 24, focuses on the second yama, satya (truthfulness). In this class, Alice and Angie combine the traditional yin asanas with thematic readings and teachings to enhance students’ experience and to create conditions that may take them deeper into the mind, body, and spirit aspects of their practice.
  • Curvy Yoga on hiatus.  Thank you for the positive feedback on January’s Curvy Yoga classes with Cassandra!  Although we have placed the class on hiatus for February while we find a better place for it on the schedule, we hope to return it in March.
  • Beginner series on Saturdays at 11 a.m.  We are pleased to announce that our second, four-week Beginner series of the year will take place in February with Leslie teaching.  Although this class is already full, please let us know if you would be interested in a future one, and we will be in touch when we schedule the next series.
  • Two monthly classes at The Downing Museum.  In February we return to The Downing Museum for our ongoing second-Saturday yoga class and add a fourth-Saturday meditation class!  This monthly meditation class replaces our previous Friday-night meditation gathering at the studio.  We are grateful for the demand for these classes and for the opportunity to practice in such a beautiful space every month.  Watch your inbox and our Facebook page for announcements of registration for the March classes.
  • Invitation to participate in theater workshop with Emily.  On Wed., Feb. 8, at 4 p.m. Emily will host a free theater workshop at the studio and would love members of our community to participate.  Check our website for details on what to expect and how to RSVP to Emily.

Inclement weather policy:  during inclement weather, we decide whether or not to cancel classes independently of area school districts’ decisions.  However, if we do need to cancel a class, we publicize that information at least one hour before it begins, and we announce all class cancellations in these three ways:

  1. an update to the online schedule of classes
  2. an email to all members of our list (send us a message at 4yoga.me AT gmail.com to be added to the list)
  3. a status update on our Facebook page

Since last April, one of our teachers, Emily Stewart, has been working on an arts fellowship in Louisville dealing with health equity (i.e., fair access to all the things that influence community wellness) in the Smoketown neighborhood.

Part of her work has been designing a series of interactive events called “Rehearsing Justice: Culture of Change Workshops.” These workshops use fun, group-oriented theatre games to explore the relationship between justice and health equity for Smoketown residents. Each event is specially designed to incorporate the goals of the community organization that is hosting it.

Before the series kicks off in Louisville, Emily would like to offer a free “practice” workshop in Bowling Green! While helping Emily get a trial run of leading one of her workshops with a live group, you will get to:

  • think about aspects of social justice from a yogic perspective
  • get curious about how you can effect change in your own life, family, or community
  • collaborate to brainstorm ideas and envision ways to overcome challenges
  • play games and have fun!
