May 2015 focus and class schedule

The last few days in Bowling Green have been “picture perfect.” The buds waking to blossoms and leaves and near perfect weather (gauged by our narrow comfort zone) bring us great joy. In the dead of winter, thoughts of these days may have inspired us.

In his commentary on the Katha Upanishad, Eknath Easwaran quotes Wallace Stevens’ poem, “Sunday Morning”: “Death is the mother of beauty; hence from her, / Alone, shall come fulfillment to our dreams / And our desires.” Easwaran continues to comment on the essence of wisdom found in this Upanishad: “ …that in all human experience it is really only the Self, pure consciousness, that is the enjoyer, so that when one realizes the Self, there is nothing else to be known and all the knots that strangle the heart are loosened and that death occurs to that part of us which was born and launched into separate existence.”

Allow the beauty and joy of spring to loosen the knots in your heart and to make space to experience this Self. Loosening the knots in your body is a very good thing to do for yourself, as well! Then relax in savasana and feel that joy in every cell of your body.

May class addition and special events:

  • New Friday Gentle class: In response to student requests, we have added a third 9:30 a.m. Gentle class, on Fridays. For May, Angie, Susan, and Kathie will rotate as teachers of this new class.
  • Restorative class: Although the Sunday Restorative class is taking a hiatus, Susan will offer a special Friday Restorative class on Friday, May 8, at 5:30 p.m.
  • Talk/meditation session: To participate in the monthly discussion and meditation event, join Juanita on Friday, May 15, immediately following the Yin class. There is no charge for this session, and everyone is welcome to learn more about meditation and its benefits and to experience a short meditation.

Introducing new teacher: Sally Swiatek

We are pleased to welcome a new teacher, Sally Swiatek!  We asked Sally to share some information about herself and her yoga experiences:

I was introduced to yoga in 2000 by my mom. She had gone to a power yoga class that was crazy hard and said that I would love it. I was teaching fitness classes at the time (spin, kickboxing, step, sculpt) and was competing in triathlons and adventure races. At the same time, I was raising my two kids alongside my husband.

We have moved around quite a bit for work, but I have always been able to continue teaching fitness and yoga in some capacity. I became a registered yoga teacher (RYT) after completing my 230+ hour teacher training with Stephanie Keatch at the Asheville Yoga Center in North Carolina. Her course covered many different disciplines of yoga, and the intentional variety of instructors gave me a very broad yet deep understanding of yoga.

There is still so much to learn, so I am looking into obtaining the next level of teacher training–300 additional hours, to earn my RYT 500. I love the way yoga helps the body with stretching and relaxation; I love the way it helps the mind to be still and focus; and I love the way it helps the spirit to accept, forgive, and embrace life.

In April, Sally is teaching four Flow classes (Mon., 4/6; Mon., 4/20; Wed., 4/22; and Mon., 4/27).   We hope you are able to join us to welcome Sally and to enjoy a challenging practice together!

April 2015 focus and class schedule

After an especially snowy and cold winter, we now see new life rising out of the dark underworld of hibernation and into the light: grass is getting greener, bulbs are emerging, buds are swelling! Can you picture yourself flinging your arms out, arching backward, and opening your heart and face to the warmth of this light? Imagine the spine rounded and draped over the thighs in child’s pose as a seed in winter. Then, as the seed begins stir, the spine unfurls and straightens to stand on knees, stretches and lengthens back, and allows the heart to open and shine like the sun in camel pose.

As we open to the emotions evoked by spring, it is still important to stay grounded. Sometimes we have to confront fear, anxiety, anger, jealously, envy, and/or greed (emotions associated with the three lower energy centers of the body) on the way to feeling radiant and expansive joy (accessed in the heart energy center of the body).

Just as the sun gives its light unconditionally, allow yourself to expand and open your heart unconditionally while, at the same time, remaining aware of the grounding, root energy into the earth. This April, we invite you to rise and shine!

We look forward to practicing with you this month, and we are pleased to announce two Easter classes, a new time for the Restorative class, a new teacher for the Flow class, and two special events.

Easter classes, new class time, new teacher, and special events:

  • Easter classes: On Easter (April 5), we offer two opportunities to practice: the 4 p.m. Basics class and the 5:45 p.m. Restorative class.
  • New time for Sunday Restorative class: In April, the Sunday Restorative class will begin at 5:45 p.m. for those of you who have asked for an earlier start time. Restorative yoga turns on the healing relaxation response by combining gentle yoga poses, using props, with conscious breathing. No yoga experience is required, and students who have difficulty managing stress or falling asleep easily may find this relaxing style of yoga especially helpful.
  • New teacher for Flow class: While Eri enjoys a maternity break from teaching, we welcome Chie Tanaka to the Flow class. Chie, originally from Yokohama, Japan, has been a faithful student of Hatha Yoga since 2004, when she began living in Atlanta, Georgia. After moving to Bowling Green in 2007, Chie continued her practice and, in 2010-11, completed yoga teacher training with Kim Herald and Angie Jones. Since then, Chie has taught yoga as a service to Japanese housewives who have accompanied their husbands (dispatched employees) to Bowling Green. Aside from her commitment to practicing yoga, Chie is frequently active in many other recreational activities such as trail hiking, 5K racing, and rock-climbing.
  • Talk/meditation session: To participate in the monthly discussion and meditation event, join Juanita on Friday, April 17, immediately following the Yin class. There is no charge for this session, and everyone is welcome to learn more about meditation and its benefits and to experience a short meditation.
  • Ayurveda Workshop: Ayurveda 101: On Saturday, April 18, Susan Polk is hosting a 4-hour workshop with Jaya Ramamurthy, an ayurvedic specialist from Atlanta. The workshop fee is $50 and includes a light, vegetarian lunch. Please see Jaya’s website to learn more about her, and contact Susan (at susanapolk@gmail.com) with questions or to register.

For a full list of April classes, please see the calendar section of the site or a hard copy available at The Pots Place.

Additional useful information:

Accessing studio after class has begun: Remember that even if you are running late when the gallery downstairs is closed, you can still join us for class. March 2015 focus and class schedule

Wake up, little seed! Usually the month of March in Bowling Green is characterized by rapidly rising daily temps, although with the recent uncharacteristic shot of winter, it may be hard to believe!

Wake up, yogis and yoginis! Realize that when your eyes open, they are not just viewing the objects of your perception. You, the seer, are projecting your inner reality onto them. Yoga Sutra 2.21 states; “the essence of the objects of perception exists only for the purpose of the seer.” For example, two people can be viewing the exact same scene and will give totally different interpretations of what they are seeing. Through the practice of meditation, we get to know our inner world, and with the ongoing practice of razor-sharp discrimination, we can begin to polish the mirror of our perception. Gradually we begin to “wake-up” to the true essence of reality, to see beyond the grosser forms that appear as objects in our world. We begin to experience ourselves as vessels of light and catch ourselves when operating out of fear with the idea that we are separate and never enough. Our universe expands! Ahhh…

Here is a little mantra/recipe to be chanted aloud or silently with a regular, strong beat: Get still (two beats), go inside (two beats), whaddya get? (two beats), go with that (two beats). Repeat as many times as you wish.

We look forward to practicing with you in March, and we are pleased to announce a new class, a new time for an ongoing class, and two special events.

New class, new class time, and special events:

  • New Beginner II class: Beginning on March 8 and continuing for the remaining Sundays in the month, we will offer a new, one-hour class from 5:45-6:45 p.m. This class is designed for students who have completed a beginners’ series of yoga classes and who want to build on that foundation and further prepare for other classes. It is also ideal for students who want to ease back into their practice after a break.
  • New time for Sunday Restorative class: In March, the Sunday Restorative class will begin at 7:15 p.m. Restorative yoga turns on the healing relaxation response by combining gentle yoga poses, using props, with conscious breathing. No yoga experience is required, and students who have difficulty managing stress or falling asleep easily may find this relaxing style of yoga especially helpful.
  • Talk/meditation session: To participate in the monthly discussion and meditation session, join Juanita on Friday, March 20, immediately following the Yin class. There is no charge for this session, and everyone is welcome to learn more about meditation and its benefits and to experience a short meditation.
  • Party for Eri and Greg Golden: As many of you know, Eri and Greg Golden are expecting their first child in April. We will gather to celebrate with them at the studio on Friday, March 27, at 7 p.m., and we hope that you can join us.

For a full list of March classes, please see the online class calendar or a hard copy available at The Pots Place.

Additional useful information:

  • Inclement weather policy: If we need to cancel class because of winter weather, we will announce that cancellation at least one hour before the beginning of the class, and we will share the cancellation notice both via email and on Facebook. If you would like us to add your email address to our list, please let us know.
  • Accessing studio after class has begun: Remember that even if you are running late when the gallery downstairs is closed, you can still join us for class. If the front door is locked, come to the back door of The Pots Place (look for the blue building) and ring the buzzer. The teacher will then unlock the door remotely for you to enter through the pottery studio.

February 2015 focus and class schedule

Dear friends,

And now, we enter the chapter of February.  We will pick up with the image of you hibernating in child’s pose as the little seed still in the dark, cold earth.  Now it is beginning to stir, to have awareness of itself and its purpose.
Enough.  These few words are enough.
If not these words, this breath.
If not this breath, this sitting here.
This opening to the life
we have refused again and again
until now.
Until now.
–David Whyte, “Where Many Rivers Meet”
Allow your next inhale to be deep as you say “Yes” and open to your life in this moment.  What did you notice?  Now let it go with an equally deep exhale. Perhaps you will be guided by the sensation to allow your body to unfurl the spine into upward-facing dog or cobra.  Feel that “yes” shining from your heart as the two shoulder blades gently press forward like hands supporting you.   Allow the feeling of gratitude to open the heart and release bitterness and holding on to grudges and feel the power that comes from that release.

We look forward to practicing with you in February, and we are pleased to announce these special events.

Special events:

  • Super Bowl Sunday class:  Join Kim at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1, for the Basics class.  Please note that this is the only class on Super Bowl Sunday.
  • New Sunday Restorative class:  By request, we have added a Sunday Restorative class that begins on Feb. 8 at 6:45 p.m.  Join Susan to wind down your weekend with this relaxing practice.
  • Talk/meditation session:  To participate in the monthly discussion and meditation session, join Juanita on Friday, Feb. 13, immediately following the Yin class.  There is no charge for this session, and everyone is welcome to learn more about meditation and its benefits and to experience a short meditation.

For a full list of February classes, please see the calendar section of our website or a hard copy available at The Pots Place.

Additional useful information:

  • Inclement weather policy:  If we need to cancel class because of winter weather, we will announce that cancellation at least one hour before the beginning of the class, and we will share the cancellation notice both via email and on Facebook.  If you would like us to add a supplemental email address for you so that you receive these notices quickly (e.g., if you want both your work and home addresses in our list), please let us know.
