October Book Club meeting: Sun., 10/7, 1:30 p.m.

Curious to learn more about yoga and to discuss yoga with fellow students and teachers?  Our October book club books—Andrea Marcum’s Close to Om and Pema Chödrön’s Always Maintain a Joyful Mind—provide both practical and philosophical advice to enhance our yoga journeys.

Cassandra leads our (roughly) quarterly book club, which will next meet on Sunday, October 7, at 1:30 p.m. in the lounge at the studio.  We welcome everyone to join us, regardless of how much of either book you complete!

Please bring a vegetarian snack to share: we will provide a selection of hot teas, plates and cups, and utensils.

We have now opened registration for the September classes, and we hope you can join us in September for the yoga class, the meditation class, or both.  Please note the start time of both classes is 10:30 a.m.

Meditation@the Museum, led by Alice Simpson:  Sat., Sept. 22, 10:30 a.m.—tinyurl.com/meditation-themuseum

Should you be unable to join us in September, watch for our October announcement (the yoga class will be held on Oct. 13, and the Meditation class on Oct. 27).  Remember, too, that the folks at The Downing Museum encourage you to visit the museum and/or the arboretum any time they are open!

August 2018 focus and class schedule

The goal of using the practices described in yoga sutra 2.29* is to develop the razor-sharpened sword of your higher mind: discrimination, which is also known as buddhi.  Without conscious development to open this channel to our higher mind, we normally default to the lower mind, consisting of the ego that identifies with past experiences and trusts the knowledge it receives from sensory input to make decisions.

The first five rungs of yoga are practices to train your attention to focus on the desired object of focus.  When left untrained, our attention gets scattered and distracted.  However, when you are able to control your attention, it enhances your ability to concentrate which, in turn, leads to meditation. It is through meditation that we are able to achieve samadhi, or deep absorption in the light of our true selves.  Concentration, meditation, and samadhi are the last three rungs of the eight-rung system of yoga.

To explore the broader system of yoga in August, you may choose to refresh yourselves on the yamas and niyamas (the first two rungs) and pick one of them to apply in a class, at work, or in a relationship.

* Sutra 2.29:  Yama niyama asana pranayama pratyahara dharana dhyana samadhayo’ stavangani.  The practice of restraint, observances, posture, breath control, withdrawal from the senses, concentration, meditation, and samadhi creates the eight-fold path of yoga.

August updates and special events:

Guest teacher on Sun., 7/15: Sydni Elhubishi

We are excited to welcome a guest teacher to the 4 p.m. Basics class on Sunday, July 15!  Sydni Elhubishi will offer this class, which will still be followed by a special Sunday Restorative class with Angie.  To help everyone get to know her prior to the class, Sydni has shared this bio:

Sydni begin her yoga practice seriously in 2015 as a supplement to other forms of exercise—at the time, not fully realizing what an impact yoga would make in her life. As her practice begin to deepen, so did her love for the practice and her desire to share it with others, leading her to a 200-hour immersion training at the Asheville Yoga Center.

Her goal now, instead of being able to teach a kick-butt power class, is to help people to gain a greater understanding of their bodies, their minds, and the connection between the two; and to share the importance of slowing down, taking time to explore the body with curiosity, and to care for it well.

We hope that you can join us to practice with Sydni on July 15!

July 2018 focus and class schedule

Freedom! On the 4th, we celebrate our country’s independence from being ruled by a government the founders found to be oppressive. Take a moment to ask yourself what freedom means to you on many levels: social, political, religious, relational, and from your own thoughts.

Last month’s focus identified the five main categories of thought patterns that generate fear and suffering (yoga sutra 2.3). In this month’s focus on yoga sutra 2.10, we look ahead to see what happens when we achieve true freedom from our negative thought patterns. It states: “When the five types of colorings (kleshas) are in their subtle, merely potential form, they are then destroyed by their disappearance or cessation into and of the field of mind itself.”

Now, that is freedom—when there is no relationship, job, or anything externally present in our lives that can be a trigger to a fearful state. Keep practicing, folks! The good news is that every time you witness yourself in the snares of a disturbing thought pattern and don’t allow it to have power over you, it weakens when it recedes. As you progress, that path get easier.

Wishing you freedom to follow your true path, to honor and express your true feelings, and to acknowledge the divine spark in each and every one of us.

July updates and special events:

  • Independence Day mixed-level class. Join Debbie on Wednesday, July 4, to celebrate the holiday with a 9 a.m. mixed-level practice. Although this morning class will be our only class on July 4, the rest of our schedule around the holiday remains the same.
  • Yoga for All on hiatus. At Ashley’s request, Sunday’s Yoga for All class will go on hiatus for July; however, you can practice with Ashley this month both at 7 a.m. on Saturdays and at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays.
  • Special Sunday Restorative class. On July 15, Angie will offer a Sunday edition of the Restorative class. It will begin at 5:45 p.m., shortly after the 4 p.m. Basics class concludes—we invite you to give yourself the gift of a mini-retreat of first an active and then a relaxing class.
  • Yoga and Meditation at The Downing Museum. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to practice yoga or meditation in an art gallery? If so, join us this month at The Downing Museum: Angie will teach the yoga class on Saturday, July 14, and Alice will continue to lead the meditation class, which will meet on Saturday, July 28. Training Thursday: Leslie creates own vinyasa

Welcome to our occasional series, Training Thursdays! This installment reports on Leslie’s recent completion of a 4.5-hour workshop titled Create Your Vinyasa.  Gillian St. Clair offered the session at her studio, Steadfast and True Yoga in Nashville, Tennessee, on Saturday, May 26, 2018.

Leslie notes that this workshop provided creative ways of changing familiar vinyasa flows (e.g., sun salutations) by using strategies like re-pacing or re-ordering the poses in the vinyasa sequence. You can experience Leslie’s sequences for yourself in June on most Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m.—her regular Basics class—and also in other Basics and Flow classes.

June 2018 focus and class schedule

Because the goal of studying the yoga sutras is Self-realization, this month we will take a look at yoga sutra 2.3 (translation and interpretation by SwamiJ): There are five kinds of coloring (kleshas): 1) forgetting, or ignorance about the true nature of things (avidya); 2) I-ness, individuality, or egoism (asmita); 3) attachment or addiction to mental impressions or objects (raga); 4) aversion to thought patterns or objects (dvesha); and 5) love of these as being life itself, as well as fear of their loss as being death. (Avidya asmita raga dvesha abhinivesha pancha klesha.)

It is interesting to notice that these mental barriers to self-realization also correlate to the chakras “below the belt.” Forgetting the true nature of who we are happens when we identify with the animal nature of ourselves. The first chakra—at the base of the spine—is about survival and the root of the fear of death. The second chakra is the pain and pleasure center, where we cultivate attraction to what we like and aversion to what we don’t like. The third chakra correlates to I-ness, our individual power and ownership.

It seems that our current collective human society is stuck in the third chakra; therefore, as you rise above the “tribal values,” you may feel some fear. However, when we as individuals and small groups move above the belt to the heart center, the polarities of pain and pleasure are perfectly balanced, and we realize that what we do to another, we do to ourselves. The love from that center is unconditional and excludes nothing.

Many asanas are great opportunities to focus on the energy centers that the poses stimulate. This month perhaps your teacher can bring those to your attention while you practice with the intention of purifying those centers and noticing what issues you can work on in your life.

June updates and special events:

  • Five chances to practice with Debbie. We are delighted that Debbie Marquette’s schedule allows her to offer five classes in June! Join her in the first half of the month for Basics, Gentle, and Mixed classes.
  • Yoga and Meditation at The Downing Museum. Come practice with us at The Downing Museum! This month, Cassandra will teach the yoga class on Saturday, June 9, and Alice will continue to lead the meditation class, which will meet on Saturday, June 23. For details and to register, see this post.
  • Yoga for All on Sundays. By popular demand, the Yoga for All class has returned to the schedule at 2 p.m. on Sundays! Join Ashley as she makes yoga accessible for everyone—all sizes, shapes, and abilities—by deploying a body-positive philosophy.
  • Living Our Yoga Yin class. On Friday, June 29, Angie continues the monthly Living Our Yoga Yin series, which combines a traditional sequence of Yin poses with an exploration of selected yoga sutras. This month, our focus will be sutra 2.3.
  • Cassandra’s summer teaching break. Other than an occasional Yoga@the Museum class, Cassandra will be taking a summertime sabbatical to allow her to attend a week-long Loving Kindness retreat at the Bhavana Society, prepare for the next two levels of Pilates testing, and complete continuing education to better serve 4yoga. She will be learning about providing yoga for cancer, chronically ill, and terminally ill patients and deepening her work with restorative yoga. She writes, “I plan on bringing all of that information home to us at 4yoga so keep on with your asana practices! You have some wonderful teachers at 4yoga, the best in Bowling Green, and I plan on attending as a student as much as possible so don’t be surprised to see me on a mat next to yours!”

For a full list of June classes, please see the online schedule or pick up a hard copy at The Pots Place. We also post a brief update each morning on our Facebook page, should you find it convenient to keep up with us there.

Accessing studio after class has begun: Remember that even if the front door is locked when you arrive, you can still join us for class.
