November (2021) schedule: 24 yoga classes and a meditation workshop!

Happy November!  We look forward to practicing with you this month, where most of our yoga classes will meet in the studio and we bring back a Sunday afternoon yoga class for three Sundays!  To make it easy to join us whenever your schedule allows, no pre-registration for yoga is needed:  classes are all drop-in and $10.

As a reminder, we welcome vaccinated members of our community to our studio classes and everyone to our outdoor classes.  In addition, to follow CDC guidelines, please wear your mask for in-studio classes until Warren County moves below the “significant” level of community transmission. *

In addition to our yoga classes, we are delighted to welcome Danny Brewington back for another meditation workshop, where we will learn tools and practices to enhance our focus.  Focusing and witnessing are two skills required for success in all of Life’s endeavors. This 90-minute workshop helps develop our attention span, bringing greater awareness and the ability to stay fixed on the act of witnessing. Students will practice techniques for shifting focus and staying concentrated—important tools in an age of constant distractions.

About Danny:  After discovering meditation in 1987, Danny has continued to study and practice both meditation and yoga in a range of traditions.  He hopes to inspire others to transform their lives with the power of meditation, and we welcome you to join us on Zoom for the October Meditation Made Easy workshop on Sat., Nov. 13, at 11 a.m. central.

To learn more about Danny, please see his bio on the Sanctuary for Yoga website. To learn more about this workshop, to which we welcome both folks who are new to meditation and those with experience, see its Facebook event.  And, when you’re ready to register, sign up here!

For the full November schedule, please see the calendar page or the image below.  And let us know how we can help you find the right class or session for your needs!

* Public health:  Warren County’s positivity rate and other metrics are trending downward, for which we are very grateful!

However, our county continues at a “high” level of COVID-19 community transmission (per CDC data) and a “substantial” level of community transmission (per state data).  Therefore, we follow CDC guidelines that people in “high” or “substantial” regions wear masks in all public indoor spaces.

If you would like help finding a vaccination location or arranging transportation to receive that vaccination, please reply to this email, and Angie will be happy to assist.

(CDC vaccine data, as of Oct. 31:  Warren County fully vaccinated: 34.2%, nationally: 57.9%. Warren County 18 and older fully vaccinated:  41.2%, nationally: 69.5%.  Kentucky vaccine data was recently adjusted to remove duplicates submitted by Kroger vaccination sites.)

Training Thursday: Leslie studies pranayama with Asheville Yoga Center!

We are excited to share this reflection from Leslie on her recent pranayama training!

In late September 2021, I participated in a 14-hour Pranayama training offered through the Asheville Yoga Center. Leaders of the training were Joe Taft, a lead teacher at AYC, and Sundar Balasubramarian, Ph.D. and research scientist in the field of integrated oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina. Sundar has found many ways in which the yoga breathing practices of his native India have therapeutic application with American patients being treated for serious medical conditions such as cancer and lung disease.

The instructors expanded my understanding of the respiratory diaphragm “our primary breathing muscle,” and the nose “a miracle organ.” We talked about the health risks of mouth breathing and the value of slowing down the breath, both for nervous system control and to allow the carbon dioxide in our breath to work properly with the oxygen in our system.

Lectures and scientific discussions were well balanced with practice time led by Joe. We practiced seated pranayama in many forms but also were guided on how to incorporate a breathing focus into more active asana poses.

The most interesting aspect of the training for me was the discussion about the ways breath can affect bodily functions. I am convinced that breath awareness carries tremendous health benefits to us all. I look forward to bringing more teaching focus on breath both as separate Pranayama practice and as a part of the standard poses in my basics yoga classes. As Joe said several times during our training session, we as yogis must be “open to the power of a slow, conscious breath.”

Training Thursday: Angie completes yoga nidra training with Mia Park!

In this training update, we share the news of Angie Jones’ completion of a hybrid, 25-hour yoga nidra training with Mia Park.  Angie joined the training via Zoom, and her classmates—from around the country—were divided between Zoom attendance and in-person attendance at Sat Nam Yoga studio in Chicago.

After experiencing yoga nidra with Danny Brewington in our recent Meditation Made Easy workshops—and hearing from other participants how helpful they found those sessions—Angie searched for a training that would introduce her both to the overall system of yoga nidra and to individual styles and techniques within that system.  She wanted to increase her understanding of the broad field of yoga nidra before potentially pursuing a more specialized training.

In “Learn to Teach Conscious Relaxation: The Art of Yoga Nidra,” Mia Park drew upon her experience studying several different styles of yoga nidra to provide a framework for the practice.  Then she helped students delve into those styles, which included Himalayan, Bihar Saraswati, iRest, Total, and Trauma-Informed.  Three books supported students’ further study: Swami Satyananda Saraswati’s Yoga Nidra, Richard C. Miller’s The iRest Program for Healing PTSD, and Tracee Stanley’s Radiant Rest: Yoga Nidra for Deep Relaxation and Awakened Clarity.

Angie especially appreciated the many opportunities to practice teach with her classmates via Zoom’s breakout room function.  She was paired with students from as far away as Wichita, Kansas, and Buffalo, New York, and all classmates provided kind and valuable feedback.  In addition, each participant was able to hold a one-on-one meeting with Mia and to join a private Facebook group to continue exchanging ideas.

To share what she has learned with our 4yoga community, Angie has three plans:  she will incorporate elements of yoga nidra in savasana at the conclusions of her active classes, feature yoga nidra in the meditation sessions she leads every other month, and highlight yoga nidra in a new class debuting in July, Restorative Guided Relaxation (Thurs., July 8, noon, at the studio).  She looks forward to helping folks relax more deeply and rest more peacefully.

Training Thursday: Shigeko completes Ayurveda Wellness Counselor Program!

In this post, we look back at June and July 2020, when Shigeko Sleeper completed a 120-hour Ayurveda Wellness Counselor Program!  Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of holistic medicine, considered an example of “complementary” or “alternative” medicine in Western cultures. James Bailey taught this program, which was offered online through Sanctuary for Yoga in Nashville, and contributes toward Shigeko’s 300-hour yoga teacher training program at Sanctuary.

The program’s four core modules, 30 hours each, covered these topics:

  • principles of Ayurveda
  • Ayurveda wellness methods
  • Ayurveda wellness assessment
  • Ayurveda wellness counseling practicum.

Shigeko reports that she was interested to learn how the Ayurveda system is both similar to and different from Traditional Chinese Medicine, a discipline she has already studied.  She notes that both fields emphasize the importance of preventative medicine and remind us “we have to be aware of what we eat and how we manage our mind and spirit.”
